About Steve Mayes
My passion is for photography of places, from the iconic landmarks of Newcastle Gateshead, to the dramatic landscapes of New Zealand. The role of the built environment is of particular importance to me, and striking architecture, new and old, dominates the subject matter that I photograph.
Following years developing my interest in photography, in 2001, soon after my move to Newcastle, I started Steve Mayes Photography. The business began life as a market stall in Tynemouth, where I sold hand-made cards and framed prints. Those days helped me to develop a range of products that are on sale throughout Newcastle, Gateshead and the North East, including greetings cards and framed prints. I also exhibit in local galleries including the Biscuit Factory.
My early work was almost exclusively black and white – a result of starting out on film and working in a dark room. Since going digital in 2004 I have worked in colour too, though black and white will always be an important medium for me.
In recent years I have supplied collections of bespoke artwork for a number of businesses throughout the UK, and this service is an important part of what I currently do. I also carry out commissioned work, mainly for architects, property developers and other firms involved in the built environment. My creative architectural photography is best suited to projects where the client wishes to ‘show off’ a development that they have been instrumental in producing.
I am now based on the award-winning Staiths South Bank development in Gateshead.
